Studio Nucleo presents In the Name of God, a site-specific installation
developed in collaboration with Ramo d’Oro, inside the historic Galleria Umberto I in Turin.
The work is installed in a space that remained closed for decades — a site suspended in time.
The intervention by Piergiorgio Robino addresses the theme of collective responsibility
in a historical moment marked by the intensification of armed conflict, both globally and locally.
From Ukraine to Gaza, war has ceased to be a distant reality. It now permeates the imagination,
infiltrates screens, thoughts, and daily life. Within this context, the piece reflects on the
aesthetics and ethics of normalised violence, and its representation.
Suspended from the ceiling, two replicas of GMLRS missiles
— designed for the HIMARS rocket system —
intersect to form a cross, a universal symbol of sacrifice.
The gesture is poetic yet direct: the weaponised object, hybridised between sculpture
and design, takes on a form charged with ideological ambiguity.
The title, In the Name of God, alludes to religion as a narrative and political device,
used to justify domination, violence, and martyrdom.
Yet the work does not confine itself to a theological dimension.
The cross that looms within the space is also a sign of secular power,
where faith is overlaid — and often displaced — by capital.
“Wars are still fought in the name of God.
But today’s God bears no stigmata, speaks no parables.
It takes the shape of capital, the voice of the market,
the cross of domination,” says Robino.
The intervention aligns with Studio Nucleo’s ongoing exploration of time as a plastic material,
shaped through accumulation, stratification, and temporal discontinuities.
In this sense, the latest work conceived for Galleria Umberto I triggers a short circuit
between past and present, placing the historical ruins of the architecture in dialogue with the iconography of contemporary conflict.
